Do These Important Things When Taking A Break From Travelling
If you are a frequent traveller, you already know how to create a spot-on packing list for nearly any destination at a moment’s notice. You have honed your travel research skills to the point of being able to guide others and experience everything whilst travelling to the fullest. What you might also do, unfortunately, is forget to take care of yourself during your downtime once you return home. Please continue reading for some reminders on how to take care of yourself while you are at home and between travels.
Take Care of Your Health Care Appointments
- Dental Health – Taking care of your oral health is essential for your overall health since the systems within your body are interconnected and can affect one another. Schedule a dental checkup twice per year. Your dental provider will examine your oral health and check for signs of concern, such as cavities or gum disease, and give your teeth a thorough cleaning.
- Annual Well Checks – Annual health examinations are necessary for any gender and require specialised care for your unique gender needs beyond a well check. If you can see one provider for it all scheduling will be that much easier. At your annual well check, talk about any age-appropriate blood tests and vaccinations in addition to vaccinations you may need for upcoming travel requirements for different countries.
- Mental Health – Mental health is part of your body’s health. If you see a therapist routinely using telehealth during your travels, take time out of your schedule to book an in-person session. That one-on-one time together is helpful to reestablish the connection with your provider and ensure you are still on the right track for your mental health needs. Even if you do not meet with a mental health provider regularly, anyone can benefit from an annual check-in to work through past trauma, discuss life changes, or simply have a chance to talk through whatever is happening in life.
- Eye Exam – You should schedule an eye exam annually to have your eye health assessed and determine whether or not you have a change in vision needs from the last visit. This is the perfect time to order new prescription glasses or sunglasses, contacts, or readers, if needed. Even if your prescription has not changed, it is a good idea to order another pair of glasses to keep with you while travelling, just in case.
- Dermatology – With all of the travel you get to enjoy, you are undoubtedly spending at least a little bit of time in the sun. Even with diligent sunscreen applications and wearing the appropriate clothing and hats whenever you are outside, it is still an essential part of your healthcare routine to have an annual skin check. Your dermatologist will conduct a whole-body inspection to look for new or changing freckles and moles and evaluate your skin health.
Continue to Exercise
Going on a vacation should be a break from your at-home life. If you choose to press pause on your fitness regimen when you are away, that is okay. The important thing is to avoid becoming complacent with yourself or your physical fitness and stop working out altogether upon return. Understand what your body needs regarding exercise and make a plan to stay active when you get back home. This will keep your body in good shape and feeling good, regardless of whether or not you continue to exercise while travelling.
Maintain or Install a Home Security System
Having a home security system is a good idea for anyone, but it is especially helpful if you are a frequent traveller, regardless of whether you have a housemate or not. The necessity becomes more so if you frequently post about your whereabouts online whilst away.
Watch this video to learn about the different home security options available. It is important to note that different countries may have varying infrastructure and component or brand availability. Even if you cannot find something from this video in your location, the content still highlights important points to help you set up a comprehensive home security system.

Catch Up with Friends
Friends are essential to a happy life, whether you have two or three favourite people or a whole group that can chat for hours, make sure you set aside time to see them individually or all at once. Catch up at a treasured restaurant or get cosy at someone’s house and listen to everyone’s stories. You have probably already shared your travel photos on your socials. If not, now is a great time to show everyone what you have been doing and hear about their lives.
Check-In with Family
If your family resides in the same place as you, whenever you are between travels, be sure to go and visit them. As time passes and people age, it is good to get an eyes-on assessment of how they are doing and determine whether they need any help at home. Beyond that, spending precious time with the people you have known the longest is good for the soul. Share stories about where you have been and hear about their lives. Keep your bonds strong by prioritising the important people in your life.
Inspect Your Luggage
Luggage is something you come to rely on during your travels but hardly ever think about until something goes wrong. When you are home, place your luggage and any other travel bags, such as cross bodies, backpacks, stuff sacks, packing cubes, compression bags, carry-ons, toiletry bags, and money bags in a well-lit area. Inspect the interior and exterior of each one while looking for worn or broken zippers, loose strings, and damage. Repair them on your own, check on warranties, or bring them to a qualified repair shop so they will be in good condition the next time you leave town.
