When you are moving house, this metaphorical and literal line in the sand is an amazing way to start all over again. It allows us the opportunity to start decluttering, but whether it’s physically or emotionally, what does it take to declutter our lives properly? Let’s show you a few things to make sure that you are doing it properly.

Define What is Trash

Lots of us tend to believe that we’ve got things in our life that are cluttered, but if you are struggling to determine what is serving a purpose in life, it might be worth investing in a storage unit. Companies such as SMARTBOX Solutions, Inc. are a lifeline to ensure that you are able to put things into storage so you can get a better understanding of what is serving a purpose in life. When it comes to decluttering, sometimes we’ve got to have a better understanding of the things that are actually adding to our lives. You may have things like essential documents that you should keep, but this is where digitizing them can make a massive difference. Taking pictures of old documents or pieces of paper that have some form of value to your life and uploading them onto a cloud system is instantly going to remove lots of the clutter.

Use the Six-Month Rule

If something is not serving its purpose after six months, is it actually worth having in your life? There may be items of clothing that we don’t use for six months, like a winter coat, but generally speaking, if there’s something that’s taking up valuable space in your home, it’s best to get rid of it.

Be Realistic

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to decluttering is thinking that you could do it in a day. If you’ve got a lot of clutter, it is going to take a lot longer than you think, and then before you know it, you should give it the time and effort necessary. Lots of people like the idea of decluttering quickly, but if you’ve got a lot of clutter in the first place, it is not something that can be done overnight. This is not just because of the practicalities of decluttering, but because you actually need to go through the process of defining what is and what is not important to you. It’s important to be realistic, and there will be many people telling you to be harsh and cutthroat, but the reality is that it’s about finding a solution somewhere in between the two.

Start Small

Decluttering is about starting really slowly but surely and building on your success. It can be very easy to get carried away and start ripping everything out of our lives, but you need to make sure that you are doing one room at a time or even smaller than that, starting with one drawer at a time! Look at the things you don’t need, but also ensure that you are getting rid of things by giving them to people who could benefit from them, for example, by taking them to a thrift store.

Decluttering your life is a very satisfying practice, but it can also be a very emotional one. Make sure that you do it properly.
