Where to Stay in Madrid: Best Neighborhoods & Hotels for Every Budget
Madrid is one of those cities that completely surprised me. While Barcelona often gets most of the attention, Madrid has its own charm with beautiful architecture, incredible food, lively plazas, and neighborhoods that each have their own personality.
I’ve visited Madrid a few times over the years, and every visit has shown me something new. Whether you’re visiting for a long weekend or planning to spend more time exploring Spain’s capital, choosing the right neighborhood can make a huge difference in your experience.
In this guide, I’m sharing the three areas I recommend most, who they’re best for, and my favorite hotel recommendations for every budget.

Quick Guide: Where to Stay in Madrid
If you’re short on time, here’s my quick recommendation:
- Sol – Best for first-time visitors and sightseeing
- Malasaña – Best for cafés, nightlife, and a local atmosphere
- Salamanca – Best for luxury shopping and a quieter stay
Sol
If it’s your first time visiting Madrid, this is where I’d recommend staying.
Sol is the heart of the city and puts you within walking distance of many of Madrid’s biggest attractions, including Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel, the Royal Palace, and Gran Vía. It’s incredibly convenient if you want to spend your days exploring on foot without relying too much on public transportation.
While it can be a little busier than other neighborhoods, it’s hard to beat the location if you’re only visiting for a few days.
Best for: First-time visitors, sightseeing, families, and short stays

Malasaña
If Barcelona has Gràcia, I’d say Madrid has Malasaña.
This is one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city because it has a much more local feel while still being close to the main attractions. You’ll find independent cafés, vintage shops, colorful streets, cocktail bars, and some of Madrid’s best restaurants.
It’s a great neighborhood if you enjoy exploring on foot and discovering places you probably wouldn’t find in a guidebook.
Best for: Food lovers, nightlife, solo travelers, couples, digital nomads

Salamanca
If you’re looking for a quieter and more upscale stay, Salamanca is an excellent choice.
Known for its elegant streets, luxury boutiques, fine dining, and beautiful architecture, this neighborhood offers a completely different side of Madrid. It feels a little more refined than the city center while still being well connected by metro.
If you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want a more luxurious experience, this is where I’d stay.
Best for: Luxury travelers, couples, shopping, longer stays
Hostels

Madrid has something for every type of traveler, and honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these neighborhoods.
If it’s your first visit, I’d recommend staying in Sol so you’ll be close to the city’s biggest attractions. If you prefer a more local atmosphere with fantastic cafés and nightlife, Malasaña is my personal favorite. And if you’re looking for a more upscale experience, Salamanca is hard to beat.
No matter where you decide to stay, Madrid is a city that’s easy to fall in love with. Between the incredible food, beautiful parks, historic landmarks, and welcoming atmosphere, I always find myself looking forward to my next visit.
