1. Strasbourg, France โ€” The Capital of Christmas

2026 Christmas market dates: November 27โ€“December 24

If I had to recommend just one European destination for Christmas lovers, Strasbourg would definitely be near the top of my list!

Located in the beautiful Alsace region of France, Strasbourg is often called the Capital of Christmas, and after visiting during the festive season, I completely understand why.

The entire historic center transforms into a winter wonderland, with beautifully decorated streets, glowing lights, Christmas trees, and charming market stalls selling everything from handmade ornaments to festive treats.

But one of my favorite things was seeing all the teddy bears decorating the buildings! I absolutely loved how much effort went into the decorations. Every street seemed to have something new to admire, and it genuinely felt like being in a different world.

2026 Christmas market dates: November 23โ€“December 29

Colmar might honestly be one of the prettiest places I’ve visited during Christmas!

If Strasbourg feels like a grand Christmas celebration, Colmar feels like stepping into a storybook. The colorful half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, glowing decorations, and little canals make the entire town feel magical.

And yes, the teddy bear decorations are just as adorable here!

I loved walking around and discovering all the festive displays throughout the town. There’s something about Colmar that makes you want to slow down, grab a warm drink, and just enjoy the atmosphere.

If you’re planning to visit Strasbourg or Colmar during the Christmas season, I’d highly recommend considering a day trip to Ribeauvillรฉ!

7. Montreux, Switzerland โ€” The Christmas Market with the Flying Santa

2026 Christmas market dates: November 20โ€“December 24

Okay, this one might be the most magical Christmas market on my wishlist!

Located along the shores of Lake Geneva, Montreux hosts a beautiful Christmas market with illuminated wooden chalets, festive food, handmade gifts, and stunning mountain and lake views.

But the biggest reason I’d love to visit? The Flying Santa Claus!

During the Christmas market, Santa appears to fly above the lakeside in his sleigh, creating a festive show that’s especially magical after dark. It’s such a unique experience and one of the reasons Montreux stands out from other European Christmas markets.

How to Plan a European Christmas Market Trip

One of the best things about visiting Christmas markets in Europe is that you can often combine several destinations into one trip.

Choose Cities That Are Easy to Combine

If you’re visiting the Alsace region of France, I’d recommend combining Strasbourg, Colmar, and Ribeauvillรฉ.

You can travel between Strasbourg and Colmar by train, then explore Ribeauvillรฉ as a day trip using seasonal transport or a guided excursion.

For a longer trip, you could also combine Christmas markets in Germany and Austria, depending on your available time and preferred route.

Book Train Tickets in Advance

I personally love traveling around Europe by train because it’s often easier than dealing with airports or renting a car, especially when visiting cities with walkable historic centers.

I usually use Omio to compare train routes, check schedules, and book tickets in English. You can use code: nancys6y9p1f for a discount!

During the holiday season, I’d recommend checking schedules ahead of time because some routes can get busy and services may operate differently around public holidays.

Stay Near the City Center

This is one of my biggest recommendations for a Christmas market trip!

While hotels in the historic center may cost a little more, being able to walk to the markets, return to your room to warm up, and enjoy the decorations after dark can make the experience so much better.

If you’re traveling during peak December weekends, book early because centrally located hotels can fill up quickly.

Dress for the Weather

European Christmas markets can be cold, especially if you’re spending hours outside exploring.

I’d recommend packing a warm coat, comfortable waterproof shoes, gloves, a scarf, and layers. You’ll likely be walking a lot, so comfortable footwear is essential!

Visit During the Week if Possible

Some of the most popular Christmas markets can get extremely crowded on weekends, particularly in December.

If your schedule allows, I’d recommend visiting during the week when the atmosphere can feel a little more relaxed.

How Many Days Do You Need for a European Christmas Market Trip?

For a first Christmas market getaway, I’d recommend at least 3โ€“4 days in one region.

For example, you could spend two nights in Strasbourg, one or two nights in Colmar, and visit Ribeauvillรฉ if your dates align with its medieval Christmas market.

If you’re planning a longer European Christmas market itinerary, a week gives you more flexibility to visit several cities without feeling rushed.

Personally, I think it’s worth slowing down and enjoying the atmosphere rather than trying to visit as many markets as possible in one trip.

Are European Christmas Markets Worth Visiting?

Absolutely!

After experiencing Christmas in Strasbourg, Colmar, Ribeauvillรฉ, and Vienna, I can honestly say that visiting European Christmas markets is one of my favorite ways to experience the festive season.

There’s something so special about walking through beautifully decorated streets, discovering local traditions, enjoying seasonal food, and seeing how different cities celebrate Christmas.

And if you’re anything like me, you’ll probably spend half your time admiring the decorations and taking photos!

Whether you’re planning your first European Christmas market trip or looking for somewhere new to visit, I hope this guide inspires you to experience a little holiday magic.

Happy Christmas market hopping!
