Where to Stay in Barcelona

Barcelona has felt like a second home ever since I first visited in early 2022. I can’t really explain it, but from the moment I arrived, something just clicked. It was one of those cities that immediately felt familiar, comfortable, and somewhere I could actually picture myself living.

Over the next couple of years, I kept finding excuses to come back. Whether I was traveling through Europe or looking for a place to slow down for a few weeks, Barcelona naturally became my home base. Eventually, I stopped pretending it was just another trip and made the move after receiving my Spanish Digital Nomad Visa.

Since then, I’ve experienced Barcelona beyond the typical tourist attractions. I’ve wandered through nearly every neighborhood, spent mornings working from cafés, discovered local restaurants, made friends here, and learned what each area is really like to stay in.

If you’re planning your first trip to Barcelona, choosing the right neighborhood can completely shape your experience. While Barcelona isn’t an enormous city, every neighborhood has its own personality. Some are perfect if you want to be within walking distance of the major attractions, while others offer a quieter, more local atmosphere.

In this guide, I’ll share the neighborhoods I personally recommend, who they’re best suited for, and my favorite hotels for every budget.

Which Neighborhood Do I Recommend?

If you don’t want to read the entire guide, here’s my quick recommendation:

• First-time visitors: Eixample
• Best overall: Eixample
• Families: Eixample or Sagrada Família
• Nightlife: El Born & Gothic Quarter
• Beach lovers: Barceloneta
• Digital nomads: Gràcia or Poblenou
• Luxury travelers: Dreta de l’Eixample
• Budget travelers: Gràcia

Eixample

If someone asked me where they should stay in Barcelona without knowing anything else about their trip, my answer would almost always be Eixample.

It’s hands down my favorite neighborhood in Barcelona and where I recommend most first-time visitors stay.

Eixample is incredibly central, feels safe to walk around, has beautiful tree-lined streets, amazing restaurants, fantastic shopping, and excellent public transportation. It’s also home to some of Barcelona’s most iconic architecture, including Antoni Gaudí’s masterpieces.

Because Eixample is such a large district, I’d recommend focusing on three areas:

• Dreta de l’Eixample
• Esquerra de l’Eixample
• Around Sagrada Família

Best for: First-time visitors, Couples, Solo Travelers, Families, Luxury travelers, Shopping

Best Hotels in Eixample

Hostels

• Yeah Hostel – One of Barcelona’s highest-rated hostels with modern rooms, social events, and an excellent location.
• Sant Jordi Hostels Rock Palace – Great for solo travelers looking to meet people, complete with a rooftop pool and music-inspired design.
• Onefam Batlló – A social hostel known for its friendly atmosphere and organized group activities.

Budget Hotels

• Hotel Limonaia – A simple, comfortable hotel just steps from Passeig de Gràcia.
• Derby Hotel – A solid mid-budget option with spacious rooms and easy metro access.
• Mosaic by Ona – Boutique-style hotel in the heart of Eixample with a fantastic location.

Mid-Range Hotels

• Numa Stay Apartments – Perfect if you want apartment-style accommodations with more space for longer stays.
• Hotel America Barcelona – Stylish hotel featuring a rooftop pool and modern rooms.
• NH Collection Barcelona Gran Hotel Calderón – Great location with comfortable rooms and a rooftop overlooking the city.

Luxury Hotels

• ME Barcelona – One of the trendiest luxury hotels in the city with beautiful rooms, rooftop views, and an incredible location.
• Majestic Hotel & Spa – A Barcelona icon known for its rooftop terrace, luxury spa, and elegant rooms.
• The One Barcelona – Modern five-star hotel featuring spacious rooms and an excellent rooftop pool.
• Cotton House Hotel – A beautiful boutique hotel inside a restored historic building.
• El Palace Barcelona – One of Barcelona’s most luxurious and historic hotels with timeless elegance.

Gràcia

If Eixample is my favorite neighborhood overall, Gràcia comes in at a very close second.

Although it’s only a short walk from the city center, Gràcia feels completely different. It has a much more local atmosphere, with charming plazas, independent boutiques, cozy cafés, and neighborhood restaurants that make you feel like you’ve stepped away from the busiest tourist areas.

I especially love coming here for coffee, slow mornings, and simply wandering through the side streets.

Best for: Longer stays, Couples, Solo Travelers, Families, Digital nomads, Travelers looking for a quieter neighborhood

• Generator Barcelona – A modern design hostel with private rooms, dorms, and a lively social scene close to Passeig de Gràcia.
• Rocket Hostels Gràcia – A small, friendly hostel with affordable dorms and an easygoing neighborhood feel.

Budget Hotels

• Hotel Via Augusta – A simple, comfortable hotel just steps from Gràcia’s shops, cafés, and metro stations.
• Hotel Ronda Lesseps – A great-value hotel offering spacious rooms near Park Güell and the Gràcia district.
• Aparthotel Silver – Apartment-style accommodations with kitchenettes, making it ideal for longer stays.

Mid-Range Hotels

• Casa Bella Gràcia by Aspasios – Stylish apartments that blend modern comfort with the charm of the Gràcia neighborhood.
• La Casa del Sol Hotel – Boutique hotel overlooking Plaça del Sol, surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and local nightlife.
• Blue Barcelona – A modern hotel with spacious rooms and excellent metro connections for exploring the city.

Luxury Hotels

• Hotel Casa Fuster – A beautiful five-star hotel inside a historic Modernist building at the top of Passeig de Gràcia.
• El Palauet Living Barcelona – Luxury suites inside a restored mansion, ideal for travelers looking for extra space and privacy.
• Sir Victor Hotel – A chic design hotel with a rooftop pool and one of the best locations between Gràcia and Eixample.

El Born & Gothic Quarter

If it’s your first time visiting Barcelona and you want to immerse yourself in the city’s history, this is where you’ll find medieval streets, beautiful architecture, tapas bars, lively plazas, and some of Barcelona’s best nightlife.

Just keep in mind that these neighborhoods can be busier and noisier, especially during the evenings.

Best for: History lovers, Nightlife, Foodies, Short city breaks

Barceloneta

If your dream trip includes spending your mornings on the beach and your evenings eating fresh seafood by the waterfront, Barceloneta is the perfect place to stay.

It’s one of the best neighborhoods in Barcelona if you want to combine sightseeing with beach days.

Best for: Beach lovers, Families, Summer travelers

• Hotel Lyon – A simple hotel near Port Vell and Barceloneta, ideal for travelers on a budget.
• Hotel Oasis – One of the best-value hotels near the beach, featuring a small rooftop pool.
• Hostal Sea & Sun – Cozy guesthouse just a few minutes from Barceloneta Beach.

Mid-Range Hotels

• Sofitel Barcelona Skipper – Elegant beachfront hotel with multiple pools just steps from Barceloneta Beach.
• Hotel Arts Barcelona – One of Barcelona’s most luxurious hotels featuring Michelin-star dining, a spa, and spectacular sea views.

Poblenou

Poblenou is one of Barcelona’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods. While I probably wouldn’t recommend it for first-time visitors since it’s farther from the main attractions, it’s an excellent option if you’ve already been to Barcelona or you’re planning a longer stay.

You’ll find a quieter atmosphere, fewer crowds, modern cafés, co-working spaces, and easy access to the beach.

Best for: Digital nomads, Longer stays, Families, Repeat visitors

Hostels

• Amistat Beach Hostel Barcelona – A modern social hostel close to Bogatell Beach with great communal spaces.
• Twentytú Hi-Tech Hostel – Eco-friendly hostel known for its sustainability and comfortable facilities.
• Ant Hostel Barcelona – Affordable hostel conveniently located between Poblenou and the city center.
• LATROUPE Poblenou Beach Hostel Barcelona Jacobs Inn – A clean, affordable hostel within walking distance of both the beach and city center.

Budget Hotels

• Ibis Styles Barcelona City Bogatell – Reliable budget hotel with modern rooms and an outdoor pool.
• Travelodge Barcelona Poblenou – One of the best-value hotels in the area with easy beach access.

Mid-Range Hotels

• The Hoxton, Poblenou – One of Barcelona’s trendiest hotels featuring stylish rooms, coworking-friendly spaces, and a rooftop pool.
• Hotel Paxton Barcelona – Modern hotel with spacious rooms, a beautiful outdoor pool, and a relaxed atmosphere.
• Hotel SB Glow – Contemporary hotel known for its rooftop pool and skyline views near Glòries.

Luxury Hotels

• The Level at Meliá Barcelona Sky – Luxury rooms with exclusive lounge access and panoramic views of the city.
• Sallés Hotel Pere IV – Upscale hotel offering one of the best spas in the Poblenou area.
• Novotel Barcelona City – Family-friendly hotel with modern amenities and a rooftop pool overlooking the Torre Glòries.

Barcelona truly has a neighborhood for every type of traveler, and no matter where you stay, you’ll never be too far from incredible food, beautiful architecture, or the Mediterranean.

If it’s your first visit, I’d recommend staying in Eixample since it’s the perfect base for exploring the city. If you’ve already visited Barcelona before or you’re planning a longer stay, Gràcia and Poblenou offer a more local experience while still keeping you connected to everything the city has to offer.

No matter which neighborhood you choose, I have a feeling Barcelona will capture your heart the same way it captured mine. It certainly did for me, and it’s a city I find myself coming back to again and again.
