Costa Brava - day trips from Barcelona

Hello blogging world! 👋

I’ve been wanting to get more active here because I’m always traveling and sharing recommendations — and sometimes it’s just easier to have everything in one place. This year I’ve been focusing on exploring cities and towns near my beautiful home base, Barcelona. Honestly, I fell in love with so many of them that I had to put together a guide for you!

If you have a few extra days in Barcelona, these day trips are the perfect way to see more of Spain without venturing too far. From beach escapes to castles, wine country, and epic hikes, here are my top picks.

🚗 Need a rental car for these day trips? I personally recommend renting from Discover Cars for affordable and reliable car rentals in Spain. Book your rental here and start your adventure!

🌊 Beach Towns Near Barcelona

  • Badalona (30 minutes by metro, L2 purple line)
Just a town over from Barcelona, Badalona has cleaner, wider beaches with way fewer crowds.
  • El Masnou (≈1 hour by train)
A quieter beach with total local vibes — the further down the coast you walk, the better it gets.
  • Sitges (40 minutes by train)
Picturesque streets, boutique shops, lively restaurants, and of course, the beach.
  • Castelldefels (≈1 hour by train)
Wide sandy beach + a castle overlooking the town.
  • Tarragona (1 hr 30–45 min by train)
Perfect for a full-day trip. Beaches plus Roman ruins in the same city = win-win.

🏰 Castles & Historic Towns

  • Girona (≈1 hour by train)
A medieval gem filled with cobblestones and colorful houses (and some Game of Thrones filming locations). You can also add on the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, often included in GoCity Pass day trips.
  • Tossa de Mar (≈1 hr 30 min by bus)
A Costa Brava favorite, with a castle right on the beach. The town has amazing seafood spots and plenty of charm — worth staying overnight if you can.

🌄 Nature & Adventure

  • Montserrat (≈1 hr by train + cable car/cremallera)
Stunning mountain views, monastery visits, and hiking trails. Make sure to book your Montserrat rack railway & cable car tickets in advance.
  • Costa Brava (1 hr 30 min – 2 hrs depending on town)
Gorgeous coastline with hidden coves, cliffs, and adventure activities. If you’re into kayaking or snorkeling, check out Catalands toursuse my code NANCY for a discount!

Barcelona is incredible on its own, but these day trips add so much more to your trip. Whether you want golden beaches, medieval castles, cava tastings, or dramatic hikes, it’s all just a short ride away.

Getting Around Spain

While some day trips from Barcelona are accessible by train, having a rental car gives you full freedom to explore off-the-beaten-path spots. If you’re planning to drive, this is my go-to site for booking rental cars across Spain – affordable, easy, and trustworthy!

✨ Have you been to any of these? Let me know in the comments which is your favorite!
