DIY Ideas for Getting More Glitter in Your Life

As the saying goes, if you want to sparkle all day, eat glitter for breakfast. But there are other ways if you can’t spare the calories. If you don’t mind getting crafty, we’ve got a few DIY ideas for getting more glitter in your life.

Make a Disco Ball

If you’re over your paper lantern phase, don’t invest in another lamp just yet. With some spray glue and a whole lot of glitter, you can convert it into a permanent disco ball for whenever you need a party. Start with a drop cloth—this part is not an option—and some spray glue. Spray one section at a time and follow with a handful of glitter. Repeat all around the sphere, and then start adding more layers. You can stop when your arm hurts.

Glimmer With Gloss

You can pump up any of your makeup with more shimmer, but DIY lip gloss is the easiest to customize. Try makeup-grade glitter, pearl dust for baking cakes, or mica powder. (Do not experiment with craft glitter or anything that’s toxic to ingest.) Just mix it in with a gloss base and some color, and your lips will have a glitzy glow. Who wants the natural look, anyway?

Create Temporary Tattoos

It’s an empowering—if odd—trend. Celebrities like Demi Lovato and Khloe Kardashian are highlighting their stretch marks with glitter paint to come to terms with their body issues. You don’t have to go that far, but you can decorate your hand with a meaningful symbol with skin-safe glitter and some eyelash glue. You can even buy all-in-one kits online and try it on your friends.

Become a Twinkle Toes

There are plenty of upcycling DIY ideas for getting more glitter in your life. Look around your closet for older clothes that could use a dash of dazzle. If you have a worn-out pair of sneakers or espadrilles, try this trick. You’ll need Mod Podge and super-fine craft glitter that almost has a dust texture; it’ll keep it from clumping. Mix Mod Podge, water, and glitter until you have a thin liquid. The water will dilute the mixture enough to keep the fabric flexible. Try two coats and let them dry well before dancing into the night.
